Law on determining some competencies
of the Autonomous Province
(Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia, Nr. 6 of February 7th 2002)
Article 56.
"Autonomous Province, through its authorities, establishes the function
of provincial citizen's defender (ombudsman), and decides about his responsibilities
and the way of exercising his powers".

Article 126.
"Local Government is entitled to establish the citizen's defender
(ombudsman), which defends individual and collective rights and interests
of the citizens, by means of controlling administration and public services.
Citizen's defender warns administration and public services about illegal
activities and maladministration, gives them propositions and criticizes
their work, and informs about that Assembly of the local government and
general public.
Local administration and public services have the duty to give all relevant
information to the citizen's defender on his demand, necessary for exercising
his activities.
Citizen's defender is elected by the Assembly of the local administration
under conditions and following the procedure determined by the Statute
and other regulations of the local government. The person elected to be
the citizen's defender must be man of high standing and politically neutral.
Powers and duties, procedure, election and dismissing of the citizen's
defender are determined by the Statute and other local regulations."
